Once a Crusader, Always a Crusader: Bound Brook Graduate Returns to Inspire the Next Generation
For Ms. Genesis Picado, the halls of Bound Brook School District hold more than memories; they represent the beginning of a journey that has come full circle.
A proud 2017 graduate of Bound Brook High School, Picado has returned to the district that helped shape her, now serving as social worker and case manager at the high school level. Every day, she works alongside students, families, teachers, and community partners to ensure students have the support they need.
Picado earned a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in social work from Montclair State University. Her own experiences growing up inspired her to pursue a career centered on helping others.
"I've always enjoyed helping others and knew I wanted a career where I could make a positive difference in people's lives," she said. "Growing up, there were times when my family needed resources and support, but we weren't always aware of what was available or how to access it. As I learned more about social work, I realized it combined everything I was passionate about -- supporting children and families, advocating for others and helping people overcome challenges."
Today, Picado uses that knowledge to help students and families navigate challenges while connecting them with valuable resources and support.
Returning to Bound Brook has made her new role especially meaningful.
"This community helped shape who I am, so being able to come back and support the next generation of students is incredibly rewarding,” she said. “It feels like a full-circle moment, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to give back to the district that gave me so much."
As a student, Picado credits the caring educators who encouraged her along the way, particularly former teachers like Ms. Shafi and Ms. Larson.
"They always made me feel supported, challenged me to do my best and genuinely cared about my success both inside and outside of the classroom," she said. "Their kindness and encouragement showed me how much of a difference caring adults can make in a student's life, and that continues to inspire the way I work with students every day."
Although she is still new to her role, Picado has already found the most rewarding part of her work: building relationships with students and families and being someone they know they can turn to for support.
When asked what advice she would offer to current Bound Brook students, she encouraged them to embrace every opportunity.
"Don't be afraid to believe in yourself, even if the path isn't always easy," said Picado. "Be kind, stay curious and take advantage of opportunities to learn and grow. The small things you do to help others can have a bigger impact than you realize, and your experiences can one day help someone else."
Picado's journey from Bound Brook student to Bound Brook social worker is a testament to the lasting impact of a supportive school community. Her story reflects how Crusaders continue to grow, achieve and create #BoundToAstound stories of their own.
